20,000+ Celebrate Bitcoin Pizza Day in 400+ Cities Worldwide

On Thursday, May 22, 2025, the world came together one slice at a time to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Bitcoin Pizza Day—and Atlantic City proudly joined in. Hosted locally by Sparkable and Tony Boloney’s from 3–6 PM, Atlantic City was one of more than 400 cities across over 100 countries participating in the fifth annual Global Pizza Party, organized by PizzaDAO—a decentralized collective of artists, developers, and pizza lovers.

A Slice of Crypto History

Bitcoin Pizza Day commemorates May 22, 2010, when Laszlo Hanyecz famously paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas. This was the first recorded use of cryptocurrency to purchase a real-world good—and a delicious one at that. At the time, those 10,000 BTC were worth $41; today, they’d be valued at over $1 billion. What began as a quirky crypto milestone has grown into a worldwide tradition celebrating the fusion of blockchain culture, community, and—of course—pizza.

Global Movement, Local Flavor

This year’s Global Pizza Party was the biggest yet, with more than 20,000 attendees across six continents enjoying free pizza, connecting with their communities, and supporting small businesses. In Atlantic City, the party featured complimentary slices, live music, and a laid-back, welcoming vibe.

The event was coordinated by our very own Shaun Smith, who helped bring the celebration to the Jersey Shore for the second year in a row. As he put it:

“We’re excited to bring this incredible celebration to Atlantic City and invite everyone to come out, enjoy some pizza, make new friends, and be a part of this global movement.”

Powered by Community and Creativity

Since its launch in 2021, PizzaDAO has distributed more than $1.2 million worth of pizza around the world—fueled by the Rare Pizzas NFT project, which brought together over 300 artists to create a decentralized pizza art collection. Every event is community-led, with local hosts partnering with neighborhood pizzerias, artists, and small businesses.

This year’s global sponsors included Base, Stand With Crypto, and the World Pizza Champions. Locally, the Atlantic City celebration was made possible by generous sponsors including:

  • Doginal Dogs
  • Sparkable
  • Mad Mutz
  • Noetrope
